Leaving from Carlsbad at 5 am, the trip to San Diego took an hour. The early morning city, just waking up, was glorious in black and white. A few people were out, and the sun was starting to rise in the east. Some Wayne Shorter in the headphones made the cool morning magic. The smells of coffee in the cafe’s and the taste of an everything bagel gave the walk a special tone; flavorful with a hint of garlic. So were the streets. Garlic avenue, that’s it. Gritty, dark, yet surprisingly satisfying.
